The Secret Millionaire

Ever watch the TV show "Secret Millionaire" where a wealthy person poses as a volunteer and ends up helping remarkable, every day citizens, aiding the truly needy? And along the way is also touched to the emotional core.  That's what Redeemer did when it handed each of us $20.00. Off we went not knowing the outcome.

In my case, it meant taking a Redeemer VBS lesson learned -- painting wooden figures for a nativity scene that a child could take home -- and bringing it to children who had never set foot inside Redeemer and more than likely not in any church. The children were all part of SPEAR, the after school  project in East Central Spokane supported by the Lutheran Church and run by Cheryl who operates on a shoestring budget. Like the TV show, good people turned up at key times. There were Bob and Sonja who early on donated paint for the figures and their $20.00. Then there were the good folks at Woodcraft on Sullivan road who cut the wood for the stables for free. And critical to the whole effort were the hours of good work by Harlem, whose precision sawing resulted in the creation of about 270 figures to be painted by the kids. Over a period of several afternoons in the depths of our cold dark winter, the children painstakingly painted then proudly took home their wooden figures.  Figures of hope for something greater than the not always kind world around them. Just look at the face of the child pictured and know that in some small way he was touched and in his child-like way may have also touched others with God's message. Now that's worth a million bucks!

Holiday Joy

Our family loves to give to the food bank, so that local families will have a wonderfull complete turkey meal for the holidays.  We have been there, out in the cold, waiting in line with hundreds of other familites, hoping to receive some food for the holidays and every other day.. Fortunately I work for a company that puts together wonderful complete meals for families during the holidays.  They call it "HOLIDAY JOY".  This company does not make a dime on these meals.  I talked to Dave and asked if some of the money donated by the members could be used in combination with my $20 ".  He got the OK!  I am pleased to  say that our $20 together was able to feed 5 families, a total of 25 people had complete turkey dinners for the holidays.  But gues what!  Our company sent 5 extra dinners to us by mistake , and was given to the food bank from our church, a total of 50 people shared wonderful meals . WOW!  What a miracle!  Thanks to everyone!

Putting Our Hands to Work!

There are 4 of us in our family so we had $80.00.  We decided that we wanted to try and make some more money with our money.  We knew we wanted to give our money to our friend Sarah.  She is going to Africa to help women with health issues.  We decided to use our money to make Christmas wreaths.  We bought wreath forms, ribbons, wire, and decorations.  Our family had a great time cutting branches in the woods.  We made and sold 20 wreaths and made $355.00.  We had a great time working together and Sarah was happy to use the money for expenses.  It felt good to give to someone.  We loved the project!  It showed us how God can bless your efforts.

Salvation Army Donation

God turned the $20 tithe I was given into $470 given to the Salvation Army. All praise, glory, and honor goes to the one true God and his son Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

Reaching out...

My wife, daughters and myself are actually members of St. Matthews Lutheran (WELS) in Spokane, but nevertheless, we participated in your $20 Project, which we thought was a great idea.
One of the many things I do is run an Animaland (same a Build-A-Bear) event program through the schools in Reno, Sparks, and Carson City, Nevada. I set aside the $20 for the purchase of skins and outfits at my cost to use with the schools that I work with in Nevada.
After I ran the designated event (which was actually in Susanville, CA) that I had set aside the $20 for, I took all of that profit as well as the original $20 and donated it to the Spokane Crisis Shelter. My wife also dropped off a women's study bible, a teen bible, and a children's bible at the shelter.
We felt blessed to be a part of the Redeemer $20 Project even though we are (WELS). Maybe our two synods no longer fellowship, but we are all still brothers and sisters in Christ.
My family has chosen to worship with you this Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas,

Did you see?

Did you see the story about the $20 Project in the Spokesman Review?  If not, you can find it HERE.  There is still time to send in your $20 Project stories.  Email us at 20dollarproject@redeemeralive.org.

Lynda, Rustin and Joseph Hall display the partially completed gingerbread castle they are making for Christ Kitchen’s annual Gingerbread Build-off. They took on the castle construction as part of the $20 project at Reedemer Lutheran Church in the Spokane Valley.

Our Family Project

Our families elected to combine their $20 Project funds ($120 total) and use them to support "The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive" a program that matches donated pajamas with a new book from Scholastic Books. We advertised and then collected new pajamas from Preschool families,. Movie Night attenders, and Keller-Williams realtors. Our pajamas became 51 pairs and 51 new books to be combined with 6,402 pairs already collected as of 12/07/2010. These will be distributed to abused or abandoned children, many never able to enjoy the comfort of having a mother or father to tuck them in at bedtime. We thank God for programs like this that provide a warm and cozy Christmas for vulnerable children both here and around the world.
